Sicily: A Little IntraFamily Competition In 1130, Roger II ordered the construction of the Cappella Palantina with its amazing mosaic work. Not to be outdone, a half century later, his grandson, William II, built the Cattedrale di Monreale on a hill overlooking Palermo. This church also featured beautiful mosaic work.
